SCETI Current Projects

Major SCETI initiatives for the academic year 2004-05 include:

1. Genizah Fragments. A joint project with the Taylor-Schechter Unit of the Cambridge University Library that seeks to create a prototype web site for reuniting - bibliographically and virtually - the dispersed corpus of fragments from the Cairo genizah.

2. Papyrology. We will be scanning and assembling bibliographic information relating to the Library's collection of papyri fragments for the APIS project.

3. Image Collections. Migrating thousands of images from the Furness (Shakespeare, theatre history) and the Smith (history of chemistry, science) Collections in the Library's image collection database.

4. Indic Manuscripts. Developing an NEH proposal to catalogue and scan Penn's collection of Indic manuscripts and in so doing create a prototype for a larger Indic manuscripts project in North America.

5. Site Redesign. The SCETI site, as part of the Penn Library web site, will be migrating this year to Oracle. Along with the migration we will be redesigning and fine-tuning the site to make it more efficient, responsive, and consistent. We will be eliminating all plug-ins (with only a few exceptions), reducing screen clutter, and improving download times.

6. Building on Strengths. We will continue to add to the Furness Collection on Shakespeare and Shakespearana, the Theodore Dreiser Web Source, and other ongoing initiatives within the Rare Book & Manuscript Library.
